Stoke City have confirmed the signing of England youth winger Ato Ampah from Chelsea on a permanent deal.

The speedy 19-year-old winger has signed a three-and-a-half year contract after travelling up to the Potteries on deadline day. The fee is undisclosed.

He will be registered as an under-21s player so does not take up a space in the 25-man senior squad, which was filled today by fellow new boy Jesurun Rak-Sakyi.

But he is expected to be a part of Mark Robins' first team plans as he looks to kickstart his career and help the Potters push into the Championship play-offs.

Ampah said: “I am very excited about this new chapter in my career.

“I know the manager and coaching staff here have a reputation for developing young players and that was a big factor in my decision.

“I am hungry, determined and excited to express myself in front of Stoke City’s supporters.”

Ampah - an athletic youngster who can play on either wing - has been with Chelsea since the age of 10 and made his first team debut in last season’s UEFA Conference League, against Astana in Kazakhstan.

He earned a reputation as a game changer in youth football and scored 19 while setting up another 18 in 41 starts at under-18s and 21 level. He was called up for England under-20s at the start of this season.

Sporting director Jon Walters said: “Ato is a player we have watched extensively and, when the opportunity arose to bring him in this month, we acted swiftly.

“He has a really strong mentality and, as a fast, dynamic winger, he is the type of player who can get you off your seat. He fits the profile of player we want in wide areas for Stoke City.

“At 19, he has significant development ahead of him, and we believe he will only continue to progress within our first team.”
