Liverpool were keen to sign Lutsharel Geertruida before the transfer window closed.

Lutsharel Geertruida has been named on Sunderland’s bench after he was denied a move to Liverpool.

The Reds were keen to sign the Netherlands international to cover the injuries of Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni (both knee) and Jeremie Frimpong (groin).

Geertruida was Liverpool head coach Arne Slot’s captain at Feyenoord. He is on a season-long loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig but the Reds were hoping that they could come to an agreement that would see Geertruida move to Anfield.

However, a potential deal before the transfer window closed at 19.00 GMT tonight proved too complex. Sunderland would have required a replacement if they were to sanction an exit.

Yet Geertruida, who has made 17 appearances for the Black Cats, finds himself on the bench for Sunderland as they face Burnley at the Stadium of Light. The 25-year-old is capable playing right-back, centre-back and centre-midfield but has been overlooked bu Regis De Bris. He was an unused substitute in Sunderland’s past two matches.
