Liverpool’s January transfer window saw them agree a £60million deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, though the 20-year-old won’t join the club until the summer. The French centre-back had been linked with Chelsea but Liverpool swooped in as they look to strengthen their backline.

The move comes months after the Reds set British transfer records for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, but missed out on Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City instead – likely prompting their pursuit of Jacquet.

Liverpool’s defence faces several challenges, with Ibrahima Konate out of contract this summer and Joe Gomez linked with a move away, while injuries to key players have disrupted continuity.

Liverpool also added Mor Talla Ndiaye from Amitie for £1million, though no full-back reinforcements arrived despite injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley.

The club have been linked with Dayot Upamecano, out of contract at Bayern Munich in 2026. The Bundesliga leaders have been negotiating a new contract with 27-year-old defender, whose current deal expires at the end of the season.

Upamecano has long been on Liverpool’s radar as the Reds look to reinforce their centre-back options, especially with Konate set to leave at the end of his contract.

The France international has been a standout in Bavaria, earning a spot in three of the past five Bundesliga Teams of the Season, highlighting his quality and consistency. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Upamecano has agreed to a new deal to remain with the Bundesliga champions.

Romano posted on X: “Dayot Upamecano approves new deal at Bayern, clubs interested are informed! He’s set to sign new contract soon at FC Bayern, happy to stay as huge boost for the club after big efforts from club and player side to make it happen. 🇫🇷 It will be valid until 2030.”
