Liverpool star will ‘assess his options’ to leave this summer after being denied January transfer

This Liverpool fan favourite is expected to be moved on at the end of the season

Andy Robertson is still expected to leave Liverpool this year after a mid-season transfer to Tottenham Hotspur failed to materialise.

The Reds blocked the left-back’s move to their Premier League rivals after injuries continued to impact the team. Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are both out, meaning Liverpool’s options will be spread thin to cover their lack of right-back options.

Tottenham were eager to sign Robertson during the January window and the Scotland international was also said to be keen on the idea. Reports of a £5 million transfer package being agreed also did the rounds, but the left-back is set to stay at Liverpool for the rest of the season.

Andy Robertson to plan for free transfer this summer

According to Football Insider, Robertson will ‘assess his options to leave’ Liverpool this summer when his contract expires.

After the Reds pulled the plug on his move to Tottenham, their North London rivals reportedly made another approach to check Robertson’s situation on Deadline Day. However, they totally ruled out the idea of their left-back leaving at this midway point in the season.

Now, the 31-year-old is said to be considering his options for the summer, when his contract is due to expire.

“He would’ve been a good signing for them on the cheap, but it now looks like it’s going to be a free transfer at the end of the season instead,” former Manchester United scout Mick Brown said of the Robertson and Tottenham saga.

“You won’t get much better than him for free, but Tottenham aren’t the only club who are going to be in for him in the summer.

“They wanted to get it done in January and they would’ve got in before other clubs, but if he’s leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract, clubs in Europe will make moves as well.

“It might be more difficult for them to get him in that case, depending on who comes in. There’s definitely going to be interest in him, and I expect him to be looking to agree a free transfer when the time comes, so it’s not going to be just Tottenham.”

Kenny Dalglish admits Andy Robertson contract should ‘run its course’

“I don’t know if he’s going to move on from Liverpool. It may be best to just let it run its course. When his contract is up, it’s up,” Dalglish said prior to the transfer Deadline Day.

"And if he has to go somewhere else, it will be sad. I hope the Liverpool supporters get the opportunity, if he is going to go, to say cheerio to him.”
