As part of the deal - worth £60million - Jacquet will spend the remainder of the season with Rennes, before officially arriving at Anfield in the summer to bolster Arne Slot’s defensive options for next season.

Standard Sport understands that Liverpool will pay a guaranteed £55m, with a further £5m in add-ons.

The 20-year-old becomes the Reds third signing of the January transfer window after Senegalese defender Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeane Ndukwe, who will also link up with the club in the summer.

Jacquet could be a replacement for compatriot Ibrahima Konate at Liverpool, with the Frenchman’s future at the club still uncertain as he enters the final months of his contract.

Jacquet is regarded as one of the brightest young defenders in Europe, establishing himself as a regular for Rennes over the past year following a successful loan spell with Clermont Foot last season.

This term he has featured in all but two Ligue 1 matches, both because of suspension, and his form caught the attention of Chelsea earlier in the window.
