Fabrizio Romano has provided a Deadline Day transfer blow for Liverpool
Liverpool are having dismal luck in their chase for new centre-backs in 2026 so far.
With multiple injury concerns this season and Ibrahima Konate expected to leave at the end of his contract, Liverpool will prioritise bringing in at least one new centre-back over the summer.
Who it will be remains to be seen, as the Reds continue to see their options fade away from them .
Liverpool handed blow in new Dayot Upamecano update
Liverpool have been linked with Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano, as his availability has attracted the interest of multiple clubs. Real Madrid have also been poking around the France international, as his current contract is due to expire in the summer.
However, all that could be about to change following an update from Fabrizio Romano on Deadline Day. After England’s 7pm deadline, the transfer expert dropped an update on social media suggesting Liverpool fans shouldn’t be holding their breath over a deal for Upamecano in the summer.
“Dayot Upamecano approves new deal at Bayern, clubs interested are informed,” Romano wrote. “He’s set to sign new contract soon at FC Bayern, happy to stay as huge boost for the club after big efforts from club and player side to make it happen. It will be valid until 2030.”
Dayot Upamecano performs U-turn on Liverpool interest
After the Bavarians had been left to wait ‘for weeks’ it was reported that Upamecano had been ‘waiting’ for Liverpool, as their interest in the three-time Bundesliga champion was confirmed.
“Everyone is waiting for his commitment, his signature. His contract is ready. But Bayern Munich will not improve their offer,” Florian Plettenberg said.
“Upamecano can sign it, [taking him until] 2030 or 2031. There’s a release clause included from the summer of 2027. He can earn €20m euros gross per year and receive a big signing fee, together with his agent.
“But Bayern is waiting for weeks, they want a decision soon. But my opinion is he’s waiting for Liverpool, for Real Madrid. Liverpool is interested in Upamecano, we can confirm that.”
