The major story at West Ham United on Deadline Day was the Axel Disasi saga.
Way after the deadline in the 2026 January transfer window had passed, however, West Ham United finally got their man.
It’s difficult to know how to view the Disasi deal at West Ham. The Frenchman, on paper, should be an upgrade on their current options.

Indeed, West Ham have the worst defensive record across Europe’s major five leagues, so the signing of a new centre-back was of the utmost importance for Nuno Espirito Santo.
Still, the 27-year-old has not played any meaningful football in months now, and the Hammers need players to hit the ground running.
Whatever one feels about the deal, it has now at least been done. Now, the player has spoken.
Axel Disasi’s opening West Ham United statement
Hours after the deadline has passed, a statement was posted on West Ham’s official website.

The defender stressed that he was looking forward to playing again, after being sat on the sidelines for so long at Chelsea.
Disasi admitted that after talks with people at the club, he got the feeling that he was really wanted in east London – which played a major role in convincing him to join.
AC Milan were also linked with Disasi but it is West Ham who have won out.
“I’m very happy to be here, to have this opportunity”, he said.
“I’m just ready to fight and to play games.

“Everyone knows my situation in the last few months, so I just want to get back on the field, feel the sensation of games and help the team.
“The Club has given me the opportunity to show my quality on the pitch. I spoke with all the people here, and I feel that they really wanted me, so that’s why I’m here today.
“It’s an exciting challenge. We know that the Club is not at the place that it should be, but I’m here to help the team and to bring what I can to achieve our goal.”
When Axel Disasi could make his West Ham United debut
The defender has at least been signed in time to make his debut for the club on Saturday against relegation rivals Burnley.
It remains to be seen if Nuno does throw his new signing in so quickly, however.

Disasi last played a Premier League game in April 2025, so to suggest he’s anything like fully fit may be unwise.
Still, with Jean-Clair Todibo suspended for West Ham over the next three games at least, it may be a risk the West Ham manager has to take.
