Liverpool have struck a deal to sign Jeremy Jacquet.
Liverpool signing Jeremy Jacquet has been tipped to become an ‘amazing’ defender.
The Reds are poised to announce a swoop for the centre-back after winter transfer window closed. Liverpool will pay up to £60 million for Jacquet, although he will remain at Rennes for the remainder of the season.
Jacquet has been a regular starter for Rennes as they pursue European qualification. He was wanted by Premier League rivals Chelsea but Liverpool stole a march and convinced the 20-year-old to move to Anfield.
Jacquet is in the infancy of his career. In total, he has made only 31 appearances for Rennes while he played 24 times on loan at Clermont Foot last season. Liverpool are undoubtedly signing Jacquet on potential - but those who have watched his progress feel he has that in abundance.
French football expert Julien Laurens told Sky Sports: "He's the real deal. I know he's only 20, he hasn't played for France and he hasn't played in the Champions League or Europa League.
"He has a long way to go but he's been impressive last season, after they [Rennes] called him back from his loan in the second division, and this season, with [head coach] Habib Beye.
"You can't get it wrong. He is going to be amazing. He reminds me of when William Saliba burst onto the scene in France with Saint-Etienne, or Wesley Fofana. It's about how much you value that potential and talent. You would pay a lot of money for someone who hasn't really proved much. It's a lot of money for such a young player."
