Chelsea swapped defenders with sister club Strasbourg on deadline day.
Mamadou Sarr, who was on loan at the French club has been recalled and, instead, Aaron Anselmino has been sent in the opposite direction.
The West London side had hoped to sign Jeremey Jacquet from another French side, Rennes, but instead he has chosen to join Liverpool in a deal worth £60 million, after agreeing a five and a half year contract with the Merseysiders.
Anselmino was recalled from his loan at Borussia Dortmund last week and was filmed in tears as he said goodbye to team‑mates in Germany.
The German club are reported to have been both surprised and disappointed by Chelsea’s decision, which was communicated them just hours before a deadline which permitted a recall expired.
Sarr played under Leroy Rosenior when he was in charge of Strasburg, and he has since gone on to enjoy international success, wining the African Cup of Nations with Senegal last month.
However his return is likely to provoke more anger among those Strasbourg supporters angry at how their team has become a feeder club for Chelsea.
