Liverpool explored a deal for the Inter Milan player before the January transfer window closed.
Inter Milan president Beppe Marotta claimed that Liverpool’s approach for Denzel Dumfries was ‘inappropriate’.
The Reds explored a potential deal to sign the Netherlands international before the winter transfer window closes. Liverpool are without a senior right-back, with Jeremie Frimpong sidelined with a groin injury while Conor Bradley won’t play again this season after having knee surgery.
Dumfries is currently sidelined with an ankle injury but is not expected to be unavailable for the long term. The 29-year-old is under contract at Inter until 2028 but it’s suggested that he has a release clause of around £21 million in the summer.
Marotta revealed that Liverpool did attempt a swoop but insisted that Dumfries was always going to stay at the San Siro. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia (via fcinter1908.com), the Inter chief said: " Dumfries-Liverpool? Simply borderline unfair phone calls, made inappropriately, which only serve to destabilize the situation, but absolutely nothing is true. Dumfries will stay with us. [Ivan] Perisic? Tied to Inter, he's had wonderful seasons. We interpreted his desire to finish the season with us, but even here the conditions were not there. While we appreciate this boy's qualities, nothing concrete has happened beyond a few phone calls.”
Liverpool were unable to get a new right-back over the line before the window shot. The Reds tried to sign Lutsharel Geertruida on a loan deal. The Dutchman, who was Arne Slot’s captain when head coach of Feyenoord, is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig.
The deal proved too complex, though, as Sunderland would have required a replacement for Geertruida, who can operate at right-back, centre-back and midfield.
Liverpool did complete the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in a deal worth up to £60 million. However, Jacquet has returned to the French side on loan for the remainder of the season. The 20-year-old centre-back has been a regular starter in Rennes’ pursuit of European qualification.
