The 20-year-old could feature for Rennes vs Marseille on Tuesday evening or take to the field on Saturday vs Rennes.

Jamie Carragher questioned Liverpool’s transfer stance after allowing the player to remain in Ligue 1 for the remainder of the campaign.

Now, Christophe Dugarry has had some fairly harsh words for the Reds.

Christophe Dugarry mocks Liverpool for Jeremy Jacquet transfer fee

Jacquet is signing for Liverpool in a £60m deal, believed to be worth £55m plus £5m in add-ons.

Following the move, 1998 World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry shared his thoughts on the price tag when speaking to RMC Sport.

When doing so, he called Liverpool ‘suckers’ for paying Rennes 72million euros.

He said: “This isn’t meant to offend the player; honestly, he’s not to blame at all, and we wish him all the best because he’s a good player.

“When you have suckers like that… Well done to Rennes. Rennes managed to find a sucker like Liverpool for 72 million euros.”

Liverpool’s financial state of play after Jeremy Jacquet deal

It remains to be seen if Jacquet will be able to live up to his price tag once he eventually arrives in England.

The player is obviously still young, but if Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate stay, he will likely be a third-choice centre-back next season anyway.

Meanwhile, despite the hefty price tag coupled with a big spending 2025 summer transfer window, Liverpool have the ability to spend more in the next transfer window, as finance expert Adam Williams explained to Rousing The Kop.

He said: “In terms of PSR, Liverpool have got a lot of headroom once you add back allowable investment in infrastructure, the women’s team, community, the academy and so on. They have never been in any danger there, so the timing of the Jacquet deal isn’t significant there. They are a little tighter on UEFA’s Squad Cost Ratio rules, yes, but looking at the figures from the Deloitte Football Money League, I don’t anticipate any real problems there either.

“So from a cash point of view they are fine, just as they are from a PSR perspective. Even if they miss out on the Champions League next season, their core revenue plus their relative frugality 2024-25 means that they will be able to go big again in the summer, if FSG sanction the investment.”
