Liverpool tried to sign Lutsharel Geertruida before the transfer window closes.
The Reds were keen to sign the Netherlands international before the winter transfer window closed. With Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni ruled out for the rest of the season with respective knee injuries, along with Jeremie Frimpong sidelined with a groin issue, Liverpool are short of defensive options.
Geertruida was Reds head coach Arne Slot’s captain at Feyenoord. Slot felt that his former skipper could add depth and versatility to his Liverpool squad. But the 25-year-old is on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. If the Black Cats were going to part ways with Geertruida, they required a replacement but could not find anyone suitable.
Geertruida has found himself down the pecking order at Sunderland in recent games and came off the bench for the final 10 minutes of their 3-0 victory over Burnley on Monday night. Le Bris was asked the failed move to Liverpool. Via our sister title the Sunderland Echo, the Stadium of Light head coach said: “We’ve had many conversations. I think we were honest and really well connected all the way through.
“When the deadline was finished and over, he accepted the decision. I think he is ready to play for Sunderland. I don’t have any worries about him being okay from now on.”
