Jeremy Jacquet is officially a Red after being announced by both Liverpool and Rennes late on Monday evening.

After weeks of speculation, intense competition from Chelsea, and last-minute negotiations that went down to the wire, Liverpool Football Club has confirmed the signing of one of Europe’s most promising defensive talents from Stade Rennais in a deal worth up to £60 million.

The Anfield faithful have been crying out for defensive reinforcements following a turbulent season that saw injury problems expose the lack of depth at centre-back. With Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni sidelined, and question marks hanging over Ibrahima Konaté’s future as his contract winds down, the pressure was mounting on sporting director Richard Hughes to deliver a statement signing.

Liverpool have agreed to pay an initial £55 million to Rennes, with a further £5 million in performance-related add-ons potentially taking the deal to a club-record sale for the French side, eclipsing the £52 million Manchester City paid for Jeremy Doku in 2023. Jacquet completed his medical examination on Merseyside on Monday and has penned a five-year contract running until 2031, with the option for an additional 12 months.

However, Liverpool fans will need to exercise patience before seeing their new recruit in action. As part of the agreement with Rennes, Jacquet will remain in France for the remainder of the 2025/26 season before officially joining Arne Slot’s squad on July 1.

Speaking to Rennes after signing, Jacquet said about his move:

“I am honoured to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world. It was also very important for me to properly conclude my time in red and black, at the club that developed me – my boyhood club. I am approaching the second half of the season determined to share great moments with my teammates and the supporters.”

The official announcement from Liverpool confirms that the transfer is subject to international clearance and a work permit, but those are considered mere formalities at this stage.
