The transfer window has now closed, with Jeremy Jacquet’s arrival from French side Rennes officially confirmed before the transfer deadline. The Reds secured the 20-year-old left-back in a stunning £60 million deal that saw them edge out Chelsea in the race for his signature.
However, while the Merseyside club was busy welcoming their new arrival, another English institution down the northwest coast was making equally shrewd business of their own. Blackpool have announced the signing of former Liverpool midfielder Leighton Clarkson on a two-and-a-half-year contract from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee, with the 24-year-old central midfielder now set until June 2028.
Clarkson joined the academy in 2008 and progressing through every youth level at Kirkby before eventually breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s senior setup. His Reds debut came as a substitute in the League Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa in December 2019. He went on to make three senior appearances for Liverpool, including a memorable start in the Champions League group stage against FC Midtjylland in December 2020.
After loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and Aberdeen, Clarkson made his switch to the Scottish club permanent in summer 2023. The midfielder has racked up 154 appearances for the Dons, winning the Scottish Cup last season and claiming Aberdeen’s Young Player of the Season award in 2022-23.
Head Coach Ian Evatt said of the move:
“We are delighted to have secured Leighton’s services on a permanent deal.
“He is someone with a great amount of experience at his age, having played regularly at a good level for Aberdeen over the last few years. He brings strong technical ability and is someone who we feel can be a real asset to the side going forwards.”
