Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish striker, has become a key player for Arsenal since joining the club. He moved from Sporting CP in the summer of 2025 for an initial fee of €55 million. The fans were excited about his arrival because of his amazing goal-scoring record in Portugal.
The Big Transfer to Arsenal
In July 2025, Arsenal signed Viktor Gyokeres on a long-term contract. He came from Sporting Lisbon, where he scored 97 goals in 102 games. Before that, he played in England for Brighton, Swansea, and Coventry City. Arsenal paid around €63 million, including add-ons, to bring him in. The club saw him as the striker who could help them win the Premier League after 22 years. Manager Mikel Arteta wanted a top goal scorer, and Gyokeres fit the bill perfectly.
A Challenging Start in North London
Gyokeres’ first months at Arsenal were tough. He scored 11 goals in his first 30 games, which is good but not as many as fans expected from someone who netted 54 times last season. He faced injuries and had to adjust to Arsenal’s style of play. Arsenal were leading the Premier League by six points, and doing well in other competitions like the Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. But Gyokeres felt the pressure. He added, “It was the same when I moved to Portugal, it didn’t work perfectly from the beginning, there was also a period where I have to adjust to the style and how they want to play. It’s the same thing here.” Despite the struggles, he focused on team wins over personal stats.
Turning Things Around
Lately, Viktor Gyokeres has started to shine. He has four goals in his last six games, including in the Champions League and league cup. In a 4-0 win over Leeds, he showed his skill. He believes there’s more to come: “There’s still time for me to show that I’m capable of doing even more than I’ve done so far.” Fans are now seeing the player who dominated in Portugal. His powerful style and link-up play are helping Arsenal stay on top.
The Epic Goal Celebration
Whenever Gyokeres scores, he does his famous “mask” celebration. He interlocks his fingers and covers his mouth and nose, like putting on a mask. He’s done it 11 times at Arsenal already. Even teammates like Gabriel have tried it, and NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo copied it once. It’s become a big hit with fans.
Inspiration Behind the Mask
Gyokeres revealed the story behind his celebration in the CBS interview. It started with his friends. “I was with my friends and they were on at me because I was always celebrating in different ways, and I think they were a bit tired to see that. They wanted me to get my own celebration,” he said. They came up with the mask idea together. He thinks it looks good and enjoys doing it.
Many people link it to Bane from the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises.” Gyokeres posted on social media in June 2024: “Nobody cared until I put on the mask,” which is close to Bane’s line, “No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.” When asked, he said, “I’m not sure if I said it was Bane, but it can be.” It’s a fun way to celebrate his goals.
Life at Arsenal
Gyokeres also talked about his dream goals: “It changes. It depends on what kind of goals you have scored recently… I love tap ins as well.” His story shows that even top players need time to settle. As he gets better, Arsenal fans can look forward to more masks and goals.
