Laporta to resign next Monday ahead of Barcelona presidential elections

Barcelona are preparing for a decisive institutional moment, with major changes set to be confirmed at the start of next week.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club will officially announce the call for presidential elections next Monday, alongside the formal resignation of current president Joan Laporta.

The move will activate a carefully regulated electoral process governed by the club’s statutes.

One of the key implications of the announcement is that any current board member who wishes to appear on Laporta’s electoral list must first step down from their existing role.

This requirement is designed to ensure fairness and transparency throughout the campaign period.

What’s the story?

From a legal standpoint, Barcelona must also avoid entering a situation where a temporary management committee is imposed.

To prevent this, at least one-third of the current board, a minimum of six members, must remain in office.

These directors will continue to oversee the club’s day-to-day operations until the current mandate formally ends.

Notably, during this transitional phase, leadership will pass to Rafa Yuste, who will assume the role of acting president.

Yuste is expected to hold that position until June 30, ensuring institutional continuity while the electoral process unfolds.

More to the story

Importantly, the board members who remain after Monday’s resignations are not excluded from Laporta’s future plans.

Should Laporta win the elections, those directors will be able to rejoin his governing team from July 1, once the new mandate officially begins.

On Monday, the club will appoint both the Electoral Board and the Polling Office, two bodies responsible for supervising the process and guaranteeing its legitimacy.

Once the electoral register is approved, the signature collection phase will open, allowing candidates to gather the necessary endorsements to validate their candidacies.
