Liverpool have officially closed their winter transfer window by securing Jeremy Jacquet’s £60 million move from Rennes. The 20-year-old French left-back represents the Reds’ marquee January signing, with the club beating Chelsea to his signature in a statement deal.

But there also has been movement for some ex-Liverpool players. Former academy star Leighton Clarkson made a deadline day move to Blackpool from Aberdeen.

Now AFC Wimbledon have announced the signing of former Liverpool striker Layton Stewart on loan from Swiss Super League side FC Thun until the end of the season, bringing the 23-year-old back to English shores after his spell abroad.

The Huyton-born forward joined the Reds’ academy at just seven years old and spent over a decade developing through the club’s celebrated youth system.

His breakthrough into senior football came under Jürgen Klopp, with Stewart making his first-team debut in November 2022 when he started in the League Cup third-round victory over Derby County at Anfield

Stewart then moved to Preston North End in July 2023 for an undisclosed fee, seeking regular first-team football to further his development. However, his time at Deepdale proved challenging, with all 16 of his Championship appearances coming as a substitute without finding the back of the net.

In January 2025, Stewart made the decision to try his luck abroad, joining Swiss Challenge League leaders FC Thun initially on loan before the move became permanent last summer.

Manager Johnnie Jackson said of the transfer: “We’re really pleased to secure the signing of Layton.”

“He is a versatile, enthusiastic and energetic forward and as soon as we spoke he showed a real willingness to come to Wimbledon.”

Director of Football Craig Cope added: “We are delighted to welcome Layton to Wimbledon.”

“He comes to us after a year in Switzerland, where he contributed towards FC Thun’s promotion last season. He will add a different option to our attacking ranks.”
