Jeremy Jacquet might not be used as a centre-back at Liverpool as he could solve big issue - opinion

Liverpool have made huge strides to strengthen their centre-back department for many years to come, which has included the addition of Jeremy Jacquet.

The Reds signed Jacquet on transfer Deadline Day, but he will not join the club until 2026/27.

Liverpool have been mocked after paying £60m for the player, who is still only 20 and has limited first-team experience under his belt.

However, Jamie Redknapp remains excited by Jacquet and expects big things of the young defender.

Amid the stopper’s arrival, Jamie Carragher has suggested Liverpool will make another signing to play alongside Virgil van Dijk next season should Ibrahima Konate leave.

Jeremy Jacquet didn’t begin his career at centre-back

If that does happen, or Konate pens fresh terms, the 20-year-old will likely be the third or fourth choice centre-back.

However, that is probably not what the player wants, especially as he has previously stressed the importance of regular minutes, as per the Telegraph.

He said: “When you’re young, the most important thing is to play. That came from me and my family. I didn’t hesitate. It shows I’m confident in myself and ready to make sacrifices to reach my goals.”

But while Jacquet may not be a regular starter at centre-back come 2026/27, there is another position he has previously played.

The report from the Telegraph said that the Rennes ace actually began his playing career as a midfielder and idolised former Manchester United star Paul Pogba.

It was not until Rennes scouts got involved that Jacquet was moved into his current centre-back role.

Jeremy Jacquet playing as midfielder could solve two problems at Liverpool

It remains to be seen if Slot would be open to a position change for Jacquet, though we already know the manager is willing to play first-team players in different roles. Ryan Gravenberch at centre-back and various midfielders at right-back the obvious examples this term.

But if the Liverpool boss is open to a change, it could solve two big problems.

Firstly, Jacquet, based on his aforementioned comments and the suggestions he rejected Chelsea due to game time fears, wants to play regularly.

But unless Konate leaves and Liverpool don’t sign another centre-back in the summer, which seems unlikely, he will not start enough to keep him happy.

Secondly, the Reds do not have a proper defensive-minded midfielder right now. Gravenberch is solid, but he is more of a box-to-box option, while Curtis Jones has been criticised for his performances in 2025/26.

In turn, as Wayne Rooney recently highlighted, Liverpool’s midfield is a ‘big problem’ right now.

But adding Jacquet into the mix would shore up what has previously been a weak point while also giving the youngster the minutes he so clearly wants next term.
