Liverpool's transfer deadline day was all about planning for the future, with the Reds wrapping up a deal for Jeremy Jacquet. French centre-back Jacquet will move to Anfield in the summer despite Premier League rivals also pursuing a move.
If that's the only piece of business conducted by the 2024/25 league champions in the summer, it would be a bit of a surprise. We might not see as busy a window as we witnessed last summer, when the club broke the league's transfer record twice, but fans will have their eyes peeled for updates.
Centre-back was an obvious area of concern before the Jacquet deal was confirmed, and now attention turns to other areas of the pitch. Jurgen Klopp boosted Liverpool's midfield during his final summer window, signing Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo - but might another addition be needed?

Liverpool have already shown an ability to beat other English sides to in-demand players with their defensive addition. Now they have a chance to repeat the trick with Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with England midfielder Wharton, who has thrived at Selhurst Park since joining from Blackburn in January 2024. Real Madrid were also mentioned as potential buyers, but there are question marks over whether they'll still be in the mix now that Xabi Alonso is no longer in the dugout.
A fee north of £100million was being touted in January, though it remains to be seen whether Palace's unique position forced them to set a prohibitive price. Marc Guehi's Manchester City move and Jean-Philippe Mateta's exit links were bad enough without the risk of losing Wharton as well.
With manager Oliver Glasner moving on in the summer, Wharton may yet decide the time is right for him to also depart. He may opt to follow Glasner to new surroundings, depending on where the Austrian ends up.

Liverpool should consider themselves to be in the mix, though. The 21-year-old midfielder still has new levels to find, and that's something he's more than capable of doing when surrounded by Champions League-level team-mates, while his quality from deep can complement what the current crop already offer further forward.
It isn't just Liverpool who were reluctant to splash the cash in January. Only two players joined Premier League sides for fees north of £40million - Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo and Crystal Palace new boy Jorgen Strand Larsen.
It should be a different story in the summer, though, with selling clubs having more time to replace any player who gets a move. Wharton may well fit the bill when it comes to Liverpool's next signing, though there's every chance he's not the last.
