Middlesbrough confirm forward signing as Man City man joins Sheffield United

Middlesbrough confirmed a new signing after the January transfer window came to an end.

Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of Ghanaian forward Listowell Lord Hinneh after a successful trial period.

It has been a productive January transfer window for Boro after they boosted their squad with four new signings since the turn of the year. Chelsea attacking midfielder Leo Castledine was first through the door on a permanent deal and he was followed by Aston Villa full-back Finley Munroe after he made a cut-price move to the Riverside Stadium. Brighton and Hove winger Jeremy Sarmiento was snapped up on loan and deadline day brought another loan addition as West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith agreed to spend the rest of the season with Boro.

There were departures as Delano Burgzorg and Abdoulaye Kante made loan moves to Bristol City and Saint-Etienne respectively and Lukas Engel linked up with MLS outfit Salt Lake City on a permanent basis. Sverre Nypan’s underwhelming loan spell at the Riverside was also brought to an end as the Norwegian youngster returned to parent club Manchester City.

However, Middlesbrough have continued to work to add to their squad and have now confirmed Hinneh has penned a deal at the club and the Ghana youth international will link up with the academy ranks.

A statement released on the club website read: “Young Ghanaian forward Listowell Lord Hinneh has joined Boro. The 18-year-old has completed a move to the club after a successful trial period, subject to receiving international clearance. Listowell has played five times in the last two seasons in the Ghana Premier League, representing Berekum Chelsea and Asante Kotoko. He was previously part of Ghana-based Samba Stars Academy, and has represented Ghana as a youth international. Welcome to Boro, Listowell!”

Sheffield United were one of the busiest clubs in the Championship on transfer deadline day. A hectic day of incomings kicked off with the loan signing of Sunderland defender Leo Hjelde and ended with the permanent addition of Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell. However, it was a signing sandwiched between those two deals that caught the eye as the Blades landed Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the season.

The England international will hope to reignite a career that has flagged during his time at the Etihad Stadium and loan spells with West Ham United and Ipswich Town have failed to trigger an upturn in fortunes. However, Phillips has admitted he is looking forward to working under Blades manager Chris Wilder and described a move to Bramall Lane as ‘a perfect fit’.

He told the Blades official website: “It was very quick. I got told at midday today (Monday) that I was coming here so made my way over here and sorted everything out. Sheffield United is close to him, I spoke to the manager, saw the calibre of players they’ve got and I also just want to play football, enjoy myself being close to home and I felt Sheffield United was the perfect fit.

“I’ve always liked Chris, I’ve always liked that manager, I’ve played against him and had a few battles against his teams. I’ve always thought he is a good manager, an honest manager, and hardworking as well and that’s something I look for. I feel like I’ll enjoy working under him.” Phillips could feature as his new side host Middlesbrough next Monday night.
