Why a James Harden trade to the Cavaliers actually makes sense

Cleveland Cavaliers fans likely woke up Tuesday morning to quite the surprising rumor: The Cavs might trade Darius Garland for James Harden?

Harden wants out from the Los Angeles Clippers before Thursday's NBA trade deadline, and yes, it sounds like the Cavs are heavily involved. The most logical return in a deal, both lineup-wise and for salary cap reasons, would be Garland.

And on the surface, it might not be a favored move for Cleveland fans. Harden is older than Garland, and he was never a favorite of opposing fans due to his game filled with foul-drawing and stepback 3-pointers.

The reality is that Harden remains a star, and there are a couple reasons this deal would work ideally for Cleveland.

Why would Cavs trade for James Harden?

Contract reasons

The reality of Cleveland's situation is that the Cavs have always been unlikely to keep Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Garland together for the extreme long run. In a couple seasons, one was going to have to go.

Trading Garland now for a future Hall of Famer is a move with foresight in that regard.

Harden's contract would also be up by the time a new Mitchell extension would kick in, which would align the books perfectly.

Basketball reasons

Harden is a pick-and-roll maestro.

Opposing fans often see his offensive game as predicated around scoring, and yeah, he's still scoring 25 points per game.

But he's one of the best passers of this era. Harden would create so many easy buckets for Jarrett Allen and for Mobley.

Alright, last thing to hedge my bets:

- Harden would be INCREDIBLE at keeping Mobley and Allen involved

- He’s healthier than DG

- Generational playmaker and would spoon-feed Strus, Merrill and Tyson 3PAs on his drive and kicks

- I’m confident he can fit next to DM

The Cavs haven't made it past the second round of the playoffs with their current roster construction. They already traded De'Andre Hunter away for Dennis Schroder and Keon Ellis.

Clearly, Cleveland wants to make a championship push. And believe it or not, Harden would help that cause.
