Pep Guardiola confirms key man a major doubt v Newcastle United as EFL rules block new Man City …

Manchester City injury news: Pep Guardiola with the latest affecting his side ahead of their Carabao Cup meeting with Newcastle United.

Cherki, who opened the scoring for City at the weekend, played just-shy of 70 minutes before being withdrawn by Guardiola. Cherki may be a doubt to feature on Wednesday night, but he has already stamped his mark on the tie having been the scorer of City’s second goal at St James’ Park in the first-leg - one that gives the Citizens clear daylight over the Magpies when they kick-off at the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking about Cherki’s injury on Tuesday, Guardiola said: “Has a knock and we will see today how he feels.”

Guardiola also confirmed that Jeremy Doku wouldn’t be able to feature at the Etihad Stadium, whilst defender Ruben Dias only returned to training on Monday after his lengthy injury absence. The Portuguese international missed the first-leg last month due to injury and is not expected to feature on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, new signing Antoine Semenyo, who scored the first goal on Tyneside last month, will be available to feature again this week. However, fellow new arrival Marc Guehi will not be able to play as he was signed after the first-leg had been completed.

EFL rules state: “A Registered Player shall be permitted to play for up to two clubs in the competition in any one season where such player moved to a different club on a permanent transfer prior to the closure of the Winter Transfer Window, or the first leg of the semi-final (whichever is sooner).”

Pep Guardiola previews Man City v Newcastle United Carabao Cup semi-final

The Citizens head into Wednesday night’s game as strong favourites to progress to March’s final. A two-goal lead from the first-leg means that all City have to do is avoid defeat to the Magpies, something they have done in all but one of their last 22 meetings at the Etihad Stadium, to book their place in the final.

On potentially reaching a first Carabao Cup final since 2021, Guardiola said: “We have the chance to make our fifth final in ten years in the Carabao Cup. Of course it was a good result [in the first leg] I would prefer to start 2-0 up but I know perfectly Howe and the many times we have played against Newcastle, the pride they have and being a Champions League team so we need to be prepared and see how the players recover after a tough game with Spurs. Play our game for our people and our fans and try to reach Wembley in March.”

Newcastle United, meanwhile, know they are just 90 minutes from either their third final in four seasons or seeing their grasp on the Carabao Cup trophy coming to an end. The Magpies have failed to score on any of their last seven visits to the Etihad Stadium, losing those matches by an aggregate score of 21-0.
