Timberwolves emerge as wildcard in Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future continues to loom over trade discussions, and The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported Tuesday morning that the Milwaukee Bucks have been largely unimpressed with the offers on the table.

Amick added that the Minnesota Timberwolves remain a team to watch, especially if they can expand talks into a multi team deal that routes draft assets to Milwaukee that Minnesota does not currently have.

“The Warriors and every other suitor should hope the Timberwolves don’t find any help from other teams here, as the prospect of them offering Jaden McDaniels and additional draft capital (on top of what they currently have) might be enough to change this conversation,” the NBA insider wrote in his article.

ESPN insider Brian Windhorst also outlined how the Timberwolves are exploring ways to position themselves in the sweepstakes for the two time MVP.

“The most aggressive team in the West right now is the Minnesota Timberwolves. They are in the game for Giannis. I don’t believe that their offers can outweigh the other offers, and I’m not even sure that Giannis is getting traded before Thursday. The Timberwolves are being aggressive. If they don’t make what I would call a Hail Mary Giannis deal, I think they are aggressively looking to upgrade their backcourt,” Windhorst commented.

Windhorst pointed to several key factors that make a Giannis trade difficult, while noting that Minnesota is still weighing every possible path before stepping away from the idea altogether. He also added that if the Timberwolves come up short in their pursuit of Antetokounmpo, the front office is expected to shift its focus toward adding a new piece in the backcourt.

Even so, without a third team entering the mix, the Timberwolves appear to face long odds in landing Giannis Antetokounmpo. That outlook would only change if Minnesota is able to make additional moves to secure future first round picks that could be packaged in a potential deal.
