Lakers' $90M Luka Doncic perfect lob threat reportedly on trade block amid Clippers-Cavs buzz

The Los Angeles Lakers are on the cusp of turning the corner this season. Luka Doncic has been the new face of the organization for over a year, and it’s clear he wants to win now rather than wait to build around him.

“Dončić being just 26 gives the Lakers a far longer timeline to build a championship-contending team, but that doesn't mean they can slow down and take their time. Dončić told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he's not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender,” CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish wrote.

ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins believes the team is close to being true contenders, but they lack a dominant big man, with Deandre Ayton being inconsistent as his offensive production has dipped.

“I got to look at a guy like Deandre Ayton right now, and that’s the only problem I have. I feel like they’re a big man away,” Perkins said.

Ayton has struggled with attitude issues at times, though he performed well early in the season. The trade deadline has been wild, with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s potential move and now James Harden in the mix. If the Cleveland Cavaliers trade for Harden, the Lakers could have the perfect big man become available for Doncic.

“Sources say (the Cavs) have explored ways of trading the contract of big man Jarrett Allen,” Lakers writer Dan Woike posted.

The Lakers weren’t expected to make major moves this deadline, only adding role players. But with Allen likely on the market due to Harden being the Cavaliers’ top target, the Lakers have a prime opportunity to swoop in.

Doncic has been waiting for a high-flying, lob-ready teammate, and Allen would be the perfect fit. He would also significantly improve the Lakers’ rim defense. Suddenly, the Lakers’ trade deadline just got a lot more intriguing.
