Newcastle confirm action will be taken as pre-Liverpool match incident involving mascot to be ‘put right’

Fans have been in uproar over a video of a young Newcastle United being abandoned on the pitch at Anfield.

Newcastle United have reportedly ‘pledged’ to investigate and set right a pre-match situation involving a mascot during their recent clash with Liverpool.

Ibrahima Konate also enjoyed a special moment as he scored his first non-headed goal for Liverpool. The centre-back had an emotional moment while celebrating, following the recent passing of his father.

A video involving Newcastle’s young mascot has been circulating in recent days and the players have been blasted for leaving her to fend for herself in the middle of the pitch.

Newcastle United slammed for treatment of young fan at Anfield

The clip in question has been posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Newcastle United content creator ‘Geordie Josh’. It shows the mascot left alone and looking around the ground after the Newcastle team run off to remove their tracksuit tops.

The camera then pans to Virgil van Dijk, who is having a kick-about with three Liverpool mascots further down the pitch.

A Liverpool photographer appears to gesture to the Newcastle mascot to go over to away players who have headed to the touchline. However, she is understandably hesitant to do so, with no direction provided from her own club at this point and You’ll Never Walk Alone starting to play over the speakers.

After standing and looking around at the halfway line, she seems to approach the Liverpool staff member again, who is now taking photographs of the home players. The clip then ends and does not show what happened beyond that point.

The video has been shared and commented on by fans from multiple clubs and even journalists. Many are outraged by the young fan being left alone in such a manner and some even found the clip hard to watch.

Newcastle United ‘pledge’ to rectify situation with young mascot

The Newcastle United Supporters’ Union replied: “We spoke to the club about this yesterday. They are aware and it is being addressed and action being taken.”

Luke Edwards of The Telegraph has also provided an update on the situation and says the club have ‘pledged to put things right’ for the young fan.

“Telegraph Sport contacted senior figures at the club after a video circulated on social media of the young girl looking lost and confused before Newcastle’s 4-1 defeat by Liverpool on Saturday evening. Club officials were not aware of the incident but have pledged to look into what happened and to put things right for the young supporter,” Edwards’ report reads.
