Carragher's a big fan: Liverpool now eyeing summer move for "brilliant" £50m+ PL star - report

Liverpool are now eyeing a summer move for a "brilliant" Premier League star, who Jamie Carragher singled out for praise earlier this season.

Reds eyeing summer signing after quiet January

Despite getting a late deal for Jeremy Jacquet over the line, with the centre-back set to join from Rennes at the end of the season, it was a quiet January transfer window for Arne Slot's side, even though the manager was keen to strengthen at both ends of the pitch.

Slot said: "If we can improve in both boxes, we can do very special things this season. But if we can only improve in one box, then it will probably be an acceptable season but not more than that. And if we can’t improve in both boxes, there’s going to be a lot of noise."

Given that Jacquet won't arrive until the summer, fans may have to temper their expectations, judging by Slot's comments, as the Merseysiders didn't make any improvements in attacking areas.

With Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili on the books, the Dutchman is blessed with options between the sticks, but it has now been revealed a new goalkeeper is being targeted ahead of the summer window.

According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool are now eyeing a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs, with the Black Cats expecting offers of over £50m for their summer signing during the next transfer window.

Manchester City and Chelsea are also credited with an interest in Roefs, given the fantastic start he has made to life in the Premier League, so there could be competition for his signature.

It appears as though Regis Le Bris' side are already preparing for life after the Dutchman, having signed Melker Ellborg in January as a potential replacement.

"Brilliant" Roefs has made flying start at Sunderland

In all honesty, Liverpool probably don't need to sign another goalkeeper this summer, given that Slot already has Alisson and Mamardashvili at his disposal, but the Sunderland shot-stopper has certainly earned a move to a top club.

Back in December, Carragher named the former NEC Nijmegen man in his Premier League team of the season so far, saying: "I’ve been really impressed with him. He’s had a brilliant start to his Premier League career."

The Heeswijk-born shot-stopper has started every single Premier League game for the Black Cats, recording one of the highest save percentages in the division.

Premier League goalkeepers Save percentage in 2025/26

Emiliano Martinez 75.3%

Robin Roefs 74.5%

Robert Sanchez 72.4%

Gianluigi Donnarumma 71.6%

Jordan Pickford 71%

The 6 foot 4 titan also ranks in joint-fifth place for clean sheets, having kept eight so far this season, so there are plenty of signs he could be worth over £50m.

At 23-years-old, Roefs still has plenty of time to develop his game even further too, but he probably isn't a necessary signing for Liverpool this summer.
