Celtic have been linked with a move for former Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is currently a free agent after leaving Turkish side Besiktas.

The 32-year-old has been without a club since August 2025 but remains free to sign outside of the transfer window. Despite his recent injury struggles, Oxlade-Chamberlain brings vast top-level experience, having won the Premier League during his time at Liverpool and earning 35 caps for England.

Oxlade-Chamberlain featured 18 times in the Turkish Super Lig during the 2024/25 season before being released by Besiktas ahead of the current campaign. While his career has stalled in recent years, he has previously shown his quality at both Liverpool and Arsenal when fully fit.

Oxlade-Chamberlain began his career at Southampton before joining Arsenal in 2011, where he made 198 appearances, scored 20 goals and won three FA Cups.

He moved to Liverpool for £35m in 2018, going on to play 146 games and win the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup. The midfielder left Anfield in 2023 to join Besiktas but departed the Turkish club by mutual consent after two seasons.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has held talks with the midfielder, who has also been training with Premier League leaders in a bid to maintain his fitness while searching for a new club.

O’Neill said: “He has trained at Arsenal for some time, since his time in Turkey. I would be very interested in doing it, but as I said, I am very surprised people haven’t taken him up closer to the area.

“I’m sure he’ll have lots of options closer to London. He was very excited by what we were saying and he knows about the football club. (Former Celtic goalkeeper) Joe Hart has spoken to him – not on our behalf – but that was a conversation he had. “If it doesn’t materialise, it doesn’tmaterialise.”

A move to Celtic Park could offer Oxlade-Chamberlain the opportunity to revive his career, while providing the Hoops with a player boasting experience, versatility and a proven winning mentality.
