Why Grizzlies-Jazz are making Jaren Jackson Jr. blockbuster trade

Well, if you were worried about a boring trade deadline, think again.

The Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz have pulled off a bizarre blockbuster deal on Tuesday involving Jaren Jackson Jr.

The full details, according to ESPN's Shams Charania:

Jazz get: Jaren Jackson Jr., John Konchar, Jock Landale, Vince Williams Jr.

Grizzlies get: Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, Georges Niang, three future first-round picks

It's a lot of names and a lot of picks, with Memphis trading away a guy who looked like a cornerstone and the sort-of-rebuilding Jazz deciding to take a swing at a star player.

Why did Grizzlies-Jazz make Jaren Jackson Jr. trade?

For Memphis, this is about moving into a new era.

They traded away Desmond Bane in the offseason, and Ja Morant may not be far behind now.

The Grizzlies get a couple intriguing young players in Clayton and Hendricks, but this is really about the three first-round picks. According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, Memphis has 13 first-rounders in the next seven years, tied for most in the NBA (Brooklyn, OKC).

The Jazz decided this was a chance to add a star player.

Utah already has Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen. Stars don't often come to Utah of their own accord, so the Jazz used assets they have to get Jackson, too.

He's a great shot blocker and a solid stretch-5 who has proven he can be a top-two player on a contending team.

Now, Utah is hoping to become that team, and Memphis is into a new era.
