The January transfer window closed on Monday night, although free-agent players can still join clubs. Liverpool have chosen not to add to their senior squad for the remainder of the Premier League season.
The Reds confirmed they have agreed a £60m deal with Rennes to sign centre-back Jeremy Jacquet on Monday, with the transfer set to take effect on July 1. Jacquet will join on a five-year contract, with the option of a sixth, and will arrive in time for the start of next season.
Liverpool had also explored a move for RB Leipzig’s Lutsharel Geertruida. However, with the Dutch right-back already on loan at Sunderland, finalising terms and allowing the Black Cats to secure an adequate replacement proved too complex at this late stage of the window.
“We’ve had many conversations. I think we were honest and really well connected all the way through,” Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris said as quoted by the Sunderland Echo.
“When the deadline was finished and over, he accepted the decision. I think he is ready to play for Sunderland. I don’t have any worries about him being okay from now on.”
Several Liverpool players also departed during the window, either on loan or permanently, as the club looked to balance their squad. Stoke City’s under-21s have secured the signing of Tyler Martin on an 18-month contract.
The 18-year-old joins from Liverpool. Martin impressed during a trial period, scoring twice in three substitute appearances in the Premier League 2.
Martin, who can play wide, joined Liverpool’s Academy as an U14 after being spotted in London by Shaun Daley. He featured for the U18s as a first-year scholar in 2024-25, having first appeared for the side as a U16 in 2023-24. His standout moment was scoring a crucial equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Kirkby.
“We are really excited to welcome Tyler to Stoke City,” Academy Director Sam Stockley said. “Since he joined us for an initial trial period, his attitude and work ethic, both on and off the pitch, has been exemplary.
“He is dynamic and quick, has an eye for goal and is versatile in terms of his ability to play through the middle and in wide areas. I look forward to seeing Tyler continue his development with his teammates and the Academy staff.”
