'Real quality': Jamie Carragher says£115m LFC star has shades of David Silva and KDB about his game

**Jamie Carragher has appreciated the dramatic change in Florian Wirtz over the last few months, as the German has gone from struggling to adjust to the Premier League to one of its best performers.**

After taking 23 games to score his first goal for Liverpool, Wirtz has come to life for the Reds and is operating with a composed confidence.

It took the German playmaker some time to truly find his feet but the signs were always there to see. A player like Wirtz needs his teammates to understand how he plays to truly get the best out of him.

That process is ongoing which is why we are seeing [the partnership Hugo Ekitike has struck up with Wirtz](https://live4liverpool.com/florian-wirtz-and-hugo-ekitikes-budding-partnership-speaks-to-an-exciting-future/) coming to the fore over the last few games.

Jamie Carragher revises his opinion of Florian Wirtz after purple patch

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

In his last ten games for Liverpool, Wirts has five goals and two assists. His understanding with Hugo Ekitike has blossomed.

It’s no surprise either as the two young players have had to shoulder the bulk of Liverpool’s attacking responsibility due to Alexander Isak’s leg break and Mohamed Salah’s AFCON attendance.

Jamie Carragher has been very critical of Liverpool this season and at times has missed the mark, but he has now revised his opinion of Wirtz after earlier lambasting him.

_“Wirtz is getting better all the time,”_ Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. _“Eventually, the mantle has to be passed on, and there is no doubt the lad has real quality._

_“The Premier League has lost Kevin De Bruyne, (but) we have gained Wirtz._

_“We are talking about special players coming into our league. I have watched him a lot and thought about whether he can get to De Bruyne’s level._

_“When I watch Wirtz, I think he could be lovely on the eye like David Silva, but he has almost a bit of both._

_“I’m not sure if he will get the numbers De Bruyne got. But, talking about a slow start… one of the games was City away and Gary Neville said he looked like a boy out there – now he has [City at Anfield (this weekend)](https://live4liverpool.com/manchester-role-liverpool-future-february/)._

_“He is confident. He has gone from a little boy, and it’s a great opportunity to shove those words down Neville’s throat.”_

Liverpool are beginning to get the best out of Wirtz

----------------------------------------------------

With Wirtz now blooming at the heart of Liverpool’s team, the £115m they paid to sign him is beginning to make sense to the critics who doubted him in the summer.

Liverpool paid £100m upfront for a 21-year-old that now has six goals and eight assists. It’s quite reasonable to assume, barring injury, that Wirtz will reach double figures in goals and assists by the end of the season.

He now has two goal contributions more than Mohamed Salah for the 2025-26 season, and looks to be every bit of the player Liverpool believed he would become.

### Perhaps Wirtz _is_ capable of replicating frightening Bundesliga record

When he signed from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, many doubted whether he would be able to translate his incredible scoring and creating form to the Premier League where the no.10 position has become the most difficult role to dominate in.

In his final two seasons in Leverkusen, Wirtz scored 34 times and assisted 35 goals – a total of 69 goal contributions in two seasons.

If he gets over 20 goal contributions in his first season at Liverpool, as he is projected to, it will be fair to say Wirtz will be every bit the £115m signing FSG and Arne Slot believed he is.
