Dennis Schroder explains how he found out about trade to Cleveland

Some NBA players learn they have been traded on social media, but that wasn’t the case for Dennis Schroder.

Schroder, who was traded by the Sacramento Kings to the Cleveland Cavaliers over the weekend, shared his first comments on the move in a video posted on his social media pages on Tuesday.

The veteran guard, who will now be playing for his 11th NBA team during his 13-year career, was traded along with guard Keon Ellis to the Cavaliers in return for forward De’Andre Hunter, a player that Kings general manager Scott Perry had previously shown an affinity for.

Sacramento also moved forward Dario Saric to Chicago as part of the deal that transpired on Saturday night.

Schroder will join a Cleveland team that is currently in possession of the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings, but his mind shifted to his family as he prepared to move to his next NBA destination.

“At first, I was thinking about my family,” Schroder said. “Of course, they live with me here, and we’ve been through it a little bit already last season, especially. So that was my first thought.”

More on former Kings guard Dennis Schroder

“My second thought was the house — the moving part, the furniture we have here and bringing it to Cleveland,” he said.

Despite the upheaval, Dennis Schroder said excitement soon set in as he considered the opportunity ahead, departing Sacramento to join a Cavs team currently in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

“My third thought was to be excited about the new team and the new opportunity,” Schroder continued. “They compete every single game, and they want to win.”

Schroder said he found out about the trade via a call from the front office while the Kings were on the road in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night.

“A day before we arrived in Washington, we had a game,” Schroder said. “The next day, I was in bed and got a call from [Kings assistant general manager] BJ Armstrong, and I knew it was coming.”

Schroder added that while the timing was abrupt, the move itself wasn’t a shock.

“You hear the outside noise all the time,” Schroder said. “The change wasn’t really surprising. I found out in the hotel in D.C.”

Dennis Schroder signed a three-year, $44.5 million deal with Sacramento during the offseason, but struggled as a starting point guard during the opening weeks of the regular season.

Upon being moved to the bench for Russell Westbrook, Schroder has turned a corner, averaging 13.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game on 42/36/80 shooting splits over 26 games as a reserve.

Now, the veteran guard will look to help boost the Cavs’ backcourt for the stretch run.
