Three former Liverpool players are also in this list
Liverpool announced late on Monday night that they had reached an agreement for the signing of Jeremy Jacquet.
The centre-back will join the Reds ahead of the 2026/27 season, after spending the remainder of this campaign with current club Rennes. Liverpool have agreed a £60 million deal for Jacquet with their Deadline Day announcement but it rounds off an overall quiet January.
Apart from Senegal youth defender Mor Talla Ndiaye, Liverpool did not make any signings over the winter window. However, the Reds still have the opportunity to consider new personnel from the free agent pool.
We’ve put together a list of six players still currently looking for their next club and who are available to sign now for free.
Former Liverpool stars available to sign for free
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Divock Origi and Raheem Sterling are all currently available to sign. The latter is the most recent to join the free agent pool after he mutually agreed to sever ties with Chelsea.
Clubs in England, Germany and Saudi Arabia have been linked with a move for Sterling. Despite a more quiet run last season, the winger is still a tried and tested goal-scorer. While it would divide Liverpool fans if he returned to Anfield, it’s always good to know a familiar face and creative player is available should an emergency arise.
Origi is a cult hero at Liverpool and would be welcomed back with open arms. After his contract with AC Milan was terminated, he must consider his next move carefully, as he hasn’t played a competitive match since 2024.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has also been linked with a move back to the Premier League since his departure from Besiktas. While injuries have been a major setback in his career, the midfielder is a passionate and effective player, who was greatly admired by Jurgen Klopp.
Free agent defenders still available to sign right now
Liverpool’s biggest problem area right now is their defence. The signing of Jacquet is positive but the Reds ideally needed reinforcements now.
With both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong injured, Liverpool will benefit from signing a new right-back. Former Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest man Serge Aurier is available to sign for free. At 33, he’s probably not a signing at the top of Liverpool’s priority list but with his Premier League experience and no price tag, it could be a simple stop-gap solution.
Another player confident in the Premier League is Kurt Zouma, who is without a club after leaving Romanian side CFR Cluj. The centre-back won two Premier League titles with Chelsea and the Europa Conference League with West Ham.
Liverpool already have limited options at centre-back, which could be made worse as it looks increasingly likely Ibrahima Konate will leave in the summer.
Another central defensive option is Daniel Amartey, who played for Leicester City for more than seven years and was at the club during their historic Premier League title win. Amartey is a versatile defender and can also play at right-back or as a defensive midfielder if needed.
