New Grizzlies cornerstone players named

With Jackson Jr. out and Morant also set to be dealt, the Grizzlies are now identifying Cedric Coward and Zach Edey as their core players.

In the wake of the Jaren Jackson Jr. blockbuster trade and the looming exit as well of Ja Morant ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, the Memphis Grizzlies are now pivoting their commitment to Cedric Coward and Zach Edey.

Per Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal, the Grizzlies are now identifying the two as the new faces of their franchise.

"While Ja Morant remains a trade candidate to monitor, the broader direction is unmistakable. Memphis has chosen patience, flexibility, and long-term upside rather than incremental retooling. A major part of that future is Zach Edey and Cedric Coward," Afseth wrote.

"Sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com that both players are viewed internally as cornerstone players."

The No. 11 pick of last year's draft, Coward is averaging 13.8 points, 6.2 boards and 2.9 assists in 45 games this season.

Edey battled injuries in his sophomore campaign for Memphis. But in the 11 games he played this 2025-26, he averaged 13.6 points, 11.1 boards and 1.9 blocks.

Memphis is set to head toward rebuilding with a 19-29 record this season.
