Los Angeles Lakers guard RJ Davis has taken home a major award.
The NBA announced that Davis has been named the NBA G League Player of the Week.
Davis is a member of the Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. In the week Davis won the award, he posted incredible numbers, averaging 32.0 points, 8.0 assists, and 6.0 rebounds while leading the G League Lakers to a 3-0 record.
Can the NBA Lakers Upgrade RJ Davis From the G League?
In 16 games for South Bay, Davis is averaging 19.7 points per game, 5.0 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 0.8 steals while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 46.5 percent from beyond the arc in 31.1 minutes of action.
The former North Carolina star guard signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Lakers in late June 2025. Davis went undrafted before he signed a deal with L.A.
Davis had a solid preseason with the Lakers, but failed to make the 15-man roster. He was one of four players to get waived in L.A.’s final round of cuts prior to the season. The 24-year-old was great in his appearances, averaging 8.6 points per game and 1.4 rebounds in 16.1 minutes of action in five games.
His time as a Tar Heel is what he’s really known for. The New York native entered Chapel Hill as a four-star recruit and thrived in his five-year career. The undersized guard averaged 15.6 points per game, 3.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 175 games.
Davis was named the 2024 ACC Player of the Year in by far his best season as a collegiate player. In that season, Davis averaged 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 42.8 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from three in 37 games and 34.8 minutes of action.
Davis capped off his 2024 season by earning First-Team All-American honors, First-Team All-ACC recognition, and the Jerry West Award as the nation's top men's collegiate shooting guard.
The likelihood of the Lakers upgrading Davis to the NBA is low, as L.A.’s needs rely on perimeter defense and an upgrade at center.
