The Golden State Warriors have been one of the top teams pursuing a blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of the NBA deadline on Thursday.
At times, the Warriors have appeared to be a clear front-runner to pull off a trade. However, those tides have been turning of late as other teams get heavily involved.
Both the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves have been aggressive in their pursuit of Antetokounmpo as well. Now, a new update on the situation has provided a bad outlook for Golden State. The Warriors can’t be ruled out, but their chances are falling.
According to a report from NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Bucks prefer the trade packages being offered by both the Timberwolves and Heat over the one that Golden State is offering.
“I’ve heard internally Milwaukee values Minnesota’s potential package and Miami’s potential package more than Golden State’s,” Fischer wrote.
Perhaps the Warriors can improve their offer before Thursday’s trade deadline. Or, it’s also possible that Milwaukee will simply hold onto its franchise face until the offseason.
What Are the Golden State Warriors Offering for Giannis Antetokounmpo?
ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania has reported that Golden State is offering a “pick-heavy offer,” which may not be something the Bucks are interested in as much.
“My understanding is the Warriors have made a pick-heavy offer, Minnesota is more of a player-centric offer and Miami is somewhere in the middle, somewhere between players and picks.”
It has been expected that longtime Warriors’ star Draymond Green would be included in the deal, whether he ended up with the Bucks or another team. Both Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody have also been names that have come up in rumors.
Golden State has the talent and draft capital to get extremely aggressive. At the end of the day, the biggest question is whether or not Milwaukee would want what the Warriors are offering.
An Antetokounmpo & Curry Duo Would Contend for a Championship
When Golden State saw Jimmy Butler go down for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, it was clear that the team would need to make a trade deadline move.
There would be no better deal for the Warriors than acquiring Antetokounmpo. Him playing alongside of Stephen Curry would make Golden State an instant top-tier championship contender.
While the scenario would be a dream for the Warriors and Curry, beating out other offers for Antetokounmpo will not come easy. Golden State may be able to find a way to increase its offer, but right now the team’s outlook for a potential trade isn’t great.
Expect to hear more rumors about the Warriors in the coming hours leading up to the deadline. Antetokounmpo is clearly their top trade target, but if they can’t land him from the Bucks, they’ll need to pivot elsewhere quickly or risk a lost season.
