Warriors reportedly trailing Timberwolves in Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes

The Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes have taken an unexpected turn.

While the Golden StateWarriors appeared poised to be the team to land the Milwaukee Bucks star before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel recently reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves are the team that’s emerged as the two-time MVP’s top suitor.

“With the NBA on Bucks watch, league sources with direct knowledge of the situation told ClutchPoints that two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has joining Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves at the top of his list,” Siegel reported on X/Twitter Tuesday. “The Wolves are trying to pull this trade off before Thursday.”

Siegel’s report is the last thing the Warriors needed this week. With Antetokounmpo expressing a strong desire to join forces with a young and thriving superstar in Edwards, Golden State shouldn’t feel great about its chances of ending its pursuit of the former NBA Finals MVP with a blockbuster trade.

On the bright side, Siegel made it clear that the Timberwolves are still working on an Antetokounmpo-centered deal, meaning the 10-time All-Star is still on the market and could technically still land with any of the organizations vying for his services.

In other words, the Warriors shouldn’t surrender just because they aren’t the frontrunners to acquire one of the NBA’s most dynamic stars.

Golden State certainly has its work cut out for it this week.
