Three very unpopular sales Liverpool have to make this summer to complete Arne Slot's rebuild - opinion

The January window may be closed, but Liverpool should already be planning their summer business.

There is sure to be another hefty spend next summer considering the current state of the Liverpool squad. The lack of depth has punished the Reds all season.

It’s not just incomings though. There are some difficult decisions to make with players currently in the squad.

Here’s three Reds who I think should be moved on at the end of this campaign — word of warning, you’re not going to like all of them. The last one is especially controversial.

Liverpool should cash in on Mo Salah

We can start with the player with the most prestige as a Liverpool legend.

Mohamed Salah isn’t at the level we have become accustomed to over the years, and it’s understandable.

The Egyptian King is 34 this year, and looks to be on the decline.

Thoughts on a Salah exit?

It’s wholly possible he finds form as we head into the final months of the season, but if not, Al-Ittihad want Salah, and Liverpool should sanction his exit.

He will leave as a club legend, ushering in a new chapter at Liverpool.

Curtis Jones needs to leave Liverpool for his own sake

Curtis Jones is now 25, and his prospects of being a regular Liverpool starter peaked a couple of months ago, but have dropped since.

Jones had interest from Spurs and Inter Milan, and that is likely to be renewed in the summer.

Liverpool’s academy isn’t producing local talent, and seeing the last first-team Scouser leave would be a bitter pill to swallow, but it would be for his own good.

I genuinely believe Jones is good enough to start for most sides in Europe — just not for his boyhood club. He shouldn’t waste his prime years warming the bench at Anfield.

Reluctantly, Alexis Mac Allister should also be sold

This is the rogue shout that will annoy some fans. Alexis Mac Allister last season was world-class, and that doesn’t go away.

If Liverpool were to sell him, it wouldn’t be due to a lack of ability, but rather the circumstances surrounding the squad Arne Slot is trying to build.

Liverpool signed Mac Allister from Brighton for just £35m, but how much would he cost now? 🤑

We think a back three is on the table, and with Florian Wirtz as an attacking-focused midfielder, the lion’s share of the workload will fall on the two central midfielders.

As outstanding a footballer as Mac Allister is, and as combative as he is in the middle of the park, he can’t cover the same ground as Dominik Szoboszlai or Ryan Gravenberch.

Regrettably, I think Liverpool should cash in on a player at the peak of his powers, receiving a healthy fee to go towards a Caicedo-type midfielder. Someone who can offer protection to the back line that Mac Allister can’t.

He’s worth at least £60 million, probably more.

It’s a harsh call, but this side is going through significant change and not everyone can survive.
