Report: Liverpool now expected to make £50m+ bid to sign 'elite' Premier League star in…

Liverpool are expected to make a move to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs this summer in a deal that could exceed £50m, according to Football Insider.

The Reds had a quiet January transfer window with no first-team arrivals or exits taking place, but the club did complete a £60m deal to sign young defender Jeremy Jacquet for the summer from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes ahead of clubs like Chelsea.

And Liverpool are already planning further additions to the squad in the summer to strengthen their squad after a disappointing season so far in the current campaign, and a surprise move for a new goalkeeper is expected to be on the agenda.

Liverpool Eyeing £50m+ Move for Roefs

Roefs, who has been described as 'elite', has been one of the best signings of the summer after joining Sunderland in a deal worth £11m last summer, keeping eight clean sheets in 24 appearances in the Premier League.

As a result, the Black Cats are now anticipating major interest in the Dutchman for the upcoming summer window, which saw them move to sign Melker Ellborg in the January transfer window. One of the clubs tipped to make an offer is Liverpool, in what would be a surprise move at Anfield.

Alisson Becker will enter the final 12 months of his contract at the club this summer, and while there has been historic interest from Saudi Arabia, there has been no suggestion that he will leave. The club also spent around £30m two summers ago to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili as the Brazilian's long-term replacement, with the Georgia star featuring this season whenever Alisson has been unavailable.

It's understood that Sunderland are expecting 'huge' offers for their starting keeper this summer, and while he is under contract until 2030, the club are aware of the strong interest growing in his services.

Liverpool Move for Roefs Would be Baffling

As good as Roefs has been this season, Liverpool do not need to be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, and especially not in this price range.

Alisson is still performing as one of the top goalkeepers in the world, and in Mamardashvili they have a top replacement for the long-term once they feel that the Brazilian isn't as good as he needs to be.

Roefs coming in would see huge pressure on him, and would also likely unsettle Mamardashvili, and overall it feels like a net negative deal. The money could be better spent on other areas of the squad, and the Reds would do well to avoid getting involved.
