Darwin Nunez in talks over a return to Europe

Darwin Nunez has endured a turbulent spell at Al-Hilal since his big-money summer move from Liverpool, with transfer speculation continuing to swirl around the Uruguayan despite only arriving in August.

The 26-year-old forward joined the Saudi champions on a three-year deal worth up to £56m, but reports suggest he’s already exploring exit routes just six months into his stint in Riyadh.

On the pitch, Nunez has been a decent contributor for Al-Hilal during the 2025-26 campaign. He has managed seven goals and four assists in 17 appearances for Al-Hilal this season, helping the Saudi side maintain their position at the top of the league table.

But multiple outlets have reported that Nunez is unhappy in Saudi Arabia and is actively seeking a return to European football, with concerns about the league’s competitive level and his preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup cited as major factors. Now Turkish journalist Sercan Hamzaoğlu has reported that Fenerbahce have made a new offer to the former Liverpool man – taking to X to report:

“Fenerbahçe has made a new offer to Al-Hilal for Darwin Núñez, including a loan until the end of the season with a purchase option. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing.”

The Saudi Pro League transfer window has already closed, with the winter transfer window in Saudi Arabia closing on February 2, 2026 at 7pm UK time, which was this past Monday.

However, Turkey’s Super Lig window is still open, which means Fenerbahçe are allowed to register new signings and can therefore negotiate to take Darwin Nunez on loan until their own deadline.

Transfer windows control when a league can register players, not when clubs can negotiate or agree exits. Al‑Hilal are free to let a contracted player leave to another association whose window is still open, because only the buying league needs to be within its registration period.
