Sunderland 'expecting' £50m summer interest in key talent amid Liverpool and Chelsea transfer…

Sunderland are reportedly anticipating big money interest in Robin Roefs this summer.

Sunderland’s decision to sign goalkeeper Melker Ellborg was informed by an expectation that they will face big money interest in current number one Robin Roefs this summer, according to reports.

The Dutchman has been a revelation since arriving at the Stadium of Light last year, cementing his place as Regis Le Bris’ de facto first choice between the sticks and garnering widespread praise for his shot-stopping ability, command of his penalty area, and general sense of composure.

Last week, Sunderland sought to bolster their goalkeeping ranks further, however, with a £3 million swoop for Ellborg from Swedish side Malmo. The 22-year-old’s arrival in turn paved the way for promotion-winning hero Anthony Patterson to seal a loan move to Championship outfit Millwall, where he has reunited with former Black Cats head coach Alex Neil.

But according to online outlet Football Insider, the capture of Ellborg is as much about planning for the future as it is about providing cover and competition in the here and now. A fresh report from the publication states that Sunderland are “expecting a £50 million-plus summer bid” for Roefs, while also claiming that the Black Cats are aware of “extensive interest” in the Dutchman from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

Meanwhile, a recent update from talkSPORT suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are also weighing up a prospective raid for Roefs. It is understood that Thomas Frank’s men could face a battle to keep hold of current number one Guglielmo Vicario at the end of the season, with the 29-year-old attracting interest from Serie A giants Inter Milan, and have consequently identified the Sunderland star as a possible replacement.

What has been said about Melkor Ellborg’s transfer to Sunderland?

Elsewhere, speaking after he put pen to paper on a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light, Ellborg said: “It feels amazing to have signed for this club. The past few days have been enjoyable, from learning about the interest, getting to know the club and the people, and finalising the move.

“The club has had an excellent season so far, and I’m incredibly happy to be part of this journey. I’m aware of Sunderland’s history, and it means a lot to be part of something with such a rich tradition. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at the Stadium of Light on Monday and hopefully playing in front of the fans soon.”

For his part, Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: “Melker has enjoyed a very positive season in Sweden, breaking into the starting XI and producing standout performances in the Allsvenskan and the Europa League. Physically strong, he has the athleticism of a modern goalkeeper and is calm and composed in possession. Melker has a lot of potential, and we believe he is ready to take this step and join our squad. We are very much looking forward to working with him.”
