Liverpool's next signing after Jeremy Jacquet seems obvious after new transfer priority emerges - opinion

Jeremy Jacquet will join Liverpool from Rennes in the summer, with a new position expected to be targeted following the addition of the centre-back.

Jacquet struggled in his first game for Rennes since signing his Reds deal on Monday evening.

The fact that the stopper isn’t arriving until the summer has shocked Paul Merson, but he will still be a welcome addition when he does eventually turn up at Anfield.

Jamie Carragher wanted Liverpool to sign another defender on top of the 20-year-old.

However, a report on Wednesday seems to suggest the Merseyside outfit will be targeting another area once the 2026 summer transfer window opens.

Liverpool set to target a winger in summer transfer window

At present, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz are the main options off the left, while Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa cover on the right.

But Slot hardly plays Chiesa, and questions continue to be asked of Salah’s Liverpool future.

Meanwhile, Liverpool wanted to add pace to their attack, and while they did so with Hugo Ekitike, the likes of Wirtz and Gakpo are not exactly the quickest.

In turn, it’s probably not surprising to see a report from The Athletic on February 4 saying that ‘adding wingers will also be high on the off-season to-do list’

A potential target is not mooted, but the obvious addition Liverpool should be looking to make is Yan Diomande.

Yan Diomande signing for Liverpool is a no-brainer

Diomande was linked with an Anfield switch earlier this year amid interest from other sides like Manchester City and Tottenham.

However, the Reds have an obvious advantage when it comes to signing the 19-year-old.

Diomande wants to play for Liverpool, saying as much in a social media video last month.

He said: “I want to play at Anfield, I want to play for Liverpool. I’m a big Liverpool fan. My father’s dream is to see me play for Liverpool.”

Diomande is incredibly quick and could be a great long-term replacement for Salah.

Alternatively, his versatility means the RB Leipzig man is also able to provide cover on the left.

So, with Liverpool already linked, a winger set to be looked at, and Diomande wanting a move at some point, it seems obvious FSG and Co. will make an approach later this year.
