The winter ransfer window has now slammed shut across Europe’s top leagues. The Reds had been monitoring several centre-back options throughout the winter market, but ultimately secured Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes who will only arrive in the summer

While the winter window is typically quieter than its summer counterpart, Liverpool’s defensive situation meant there was genuine expectation that the club might make a move to bolster their options at the back. With question marks hanging over several players and the need to plan for life beyond certain veterans, the January period represented an opportunity to get deals done before the summer scramble.

Among the names that had been consistently linked with a switch to Anfield was Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano. The 27-year-old centre-back had been in the final months of his contract with the Bundesliga giants, making him an attractive proposition for Europe’s elite clubs. Sky Germany had confirmed that Liverpool were among the sides keeping a close eye on the defender’s situation in Bavaria, with reports suggesting the Reds were monitoring developments as contract talks between Upamecano and Bayern dragged on for months.

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Upamecano was “waiting” on potential interest from clubs like Liverpool and Real Madrid, even as Bayern presented him with a lucrative contract extension. The German broadcaster confirmed that Liverpool had genuine interest in the former RB Leipzig man.

However, the speculation is set to come to an end, with Fabrizio Romano confirming Upamecano will sign a new deal in Bavaria:

“I exclusively revealed yesterday that Dayot Upamecano will stay at Bayern Munich, he signs a new contract out of nowhere,” the Italian said on his YouTube channel.

“It’s out of nowhere because reports from Germany, which were actually correct, was that Bayern decided to withdrawal proposal because they didn’t want to wait too long.”

“But after that, Upamecano told Bayern ‘I want to stay here’ and the message was clear, so he was accepting the conditions from the club.”

“A big signing fee, and important salary, and a contract until 2030. There is a release clause in contract, but not valid for this summer instead from 2027.”
