Manchester City v Newcastle United: Eddie Howe could ring the changes for Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg clash with Manchester City tonight.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal await the winners of tonight’s semi-final at the Etihad Stadium - but Newcastle United know they must overturn a two-goal deficit to make it to another Wembley final.
Their record at the Etihad Stadium, meanwhile, is disastrous with history and form books totally against them tonight. Eddie Howe has lost on all six previous visits to the blue half of Manchester as Newcastle United manager, with the Magpies failing to register a single goal in that time.
But records are there to be broken and Howe and his team will be hopeful of making history this evening. However, they will have to do that without a number of key players with Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento and Joelinton all ruled-out of featuring against Pep Guardiola’s side.
A heavy defeat at Anfield at the weekend was far from ideal preparation for the Magpies, although they can take some heart from their performance against PSG last week. Howe may even revert to the five-at-the-back formation that worked so well in Paris.
Here, we take a look at the Newcastle United starting XI that Howe could name for his side’s clash against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup tonight. Do you agree with our picks? Follow us on our social media channels and let us know your thoughts there.

Nick Pope
Pope will almost certainly start in goal tonight and will be desperate to keep a clean sheet to help his teammates overthrow their two-goal deficit.

Kieran Trippier
Lewis Miley’s current injury issues means that it is likely Trippier will get another go in the starting XI tonight.
Malick Thiaw
Thiaw’s long run of consecutive appearances will likely continue at the Etihad Stadium. Dealing with City’s front line will be top of his agenda.
Sven Botman
Although there are doubts over Botman’s fitness, there is a chance he starts tonight. He has dealt very well with Erling Haaland in the past and will have to do so again if the Magpies stand any chance of progressing.
Dan Burn
Burn was brilliant in this exact role against PSG last week and will be hopeful of repeating that performance at the Etihad Stadium.
Lewis Hall
Hall could be the key to success tonight for Newcastle United if he can shut down his opposite winger and get his side going in attack.
Sandro Tonali
A big performance is needed from Tonali - where better to do that than in a second-leg of a semi-final?
Jacob Ramsey
Injuries elsewhere could again offer Ramsey a chance to start. He was very good against PSG in a similar role and will have to be at his best tonight if his side wants to control the midfield battle.
Anthony Elanga
Elanga’s pace could be a huge weapon if Howe decides that counter-attacking Manchester City is the best game plan.
Nick Woltemade
Woltemade’s close control, flicks and tricks could be something that unlocks doors for his team. The German also desperately needs a goal.
Yoane Wissa
Rather surprisingly, neither Wissa nor Woltemade started at Anfield on Saturday. They both could get that chance tonight with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes providing support and pace from the bench.
