Ethan Nwaneri has been told he should have been sent off during his latest outing for loan side Marseille. The Arsenal star joined the French side on loan until the end of the season during the January transfer window.

And he enjoyed a dream start, scoring on his debut but it hasn't gone as smoothly since. He endured a difficult outing against Paris FC at the weekend and has now been told that he was fortunate to escape a red card in Marseille’s French Cup victory over Rennes.

The midfielder crunched in on midfield rival Glen Kamara, whose ankle buckled in the immediate aftermath. That left his Rennes teammates furious at the challenge, with manager Habib Beye reportedly saying: “If it’s on the other side, it’s a red card.”

But the referee only brandished a yellow card to Nwaneri, while Kamara was forced off of the pitch with an injury. Speaking after the game, a furious Beye said: “The referee also acknowledged that there was a red card for the tackle on Kamara in the first half.”

Marseille eventually went on to win 3-0 against Rennes to reach the next round of the French Cup. Amine Gouiri had given the side the lead early on, with Mason Greenwood doubling the lead.

Former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rounded off the scoring late on. Speaking after his side’s victory, the Gabonese frontman said: "We owe it to them, we saw each other yesterday.

"In moments like these, you have to be humble and admit your mistakes. We had to win tonight, they want to win the Coupe de France, we'll do everything we can to make that happen."

Marseille will now turn their attention back to this weekend’s upcoming clash with rivals Paris Saint-Germain. Marseille currently sit nine points behind the reigning champions in the race for this season’s title.

Speaking ahead of that game, boss Roberto De Zerbi said: “I believe PSG is the strongest team in Europe. I sincerely believe that. Words are just words. We have to go out on the pitch hungry, with more quality than we showed tonight. We have to have the ambition to win in Paris. Everyone has to have that.”

Nwaneri will be aiming to have an impact once more should he be selected in the starting line-up by De Zerbi. The young midfielder has made 51 appearances in all for Arsenal and scored ten goals ahead of deciding to move to France in an effort to gain more first-team exposure.
