Lutsharel Geertruida’s versatility could prove key as Sunderland prepare to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, writes Luke Carr.
Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida was linked with a move to Liverpool during the recent transfer window, but the deal ultimately fell through after the Black Cats were unable to source a suitable replacement.
Ahead of Sunderland’s trip to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, head coach Régis Le Bris has played down any concerns over Geertruida’s position in the squad. Given the Dutchman’s versatility across the pitch, there are several reasons why he could yet prove a valuable option against the league leaders.
Defending set pieces
Arsenal have scored more goals from set pieces than any other Premier League side this season, with 17 coming from dead-ball situations. It is an area Sunderland will be acutely aware of heading into the weekend.
Le Bris is expected to consider a 5-4-1 shape, a system used successfully in the reverse fixture and during the away win at Chelsea earlier this season. In that setup, Geertruida’s presence could be significant. The Dutchman ranked in the top one per cent of players for aerial duels won last season, according to Fbref, and could form a strong defensive trio alongside Dan Ballard and Omar Alderete to counter Arsenal’s physical threat.
Attacking options
Geertruida’s inclusion could also have benefits going forward. His presence may allow Nordi Mukiele, Sunderland’s third-highest assist provider this season, greater licence to push on down the right flank.
Statistically, Geertruida offers quality in possession as well. He ranked in the top one per cent of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues for long passes completed last season, highlighting his ability to find teammates in space and help Sunderland bypass a high Arsenal press.

That quality was evident earlier in the campaign, most notably in the build-up to Chemsdine Talbi’s dramatic late winner at Stamford Bridge, when Geertruida’s long pass over the defence released Brian Brobbey and allowed Sunderland to progress quickly up the pitch.
Tactical flexibility
Even if Trai Hume starts ahead of him, Geertruida could still play a key role from the bench. His adaptability gives Le Bris the option to alter shape mid-game, particularly if Sunderland need to chase the contest.
A switch to a more attacking 4-3-3 could see Enzo Le Fée return to the left wing, with Geertruida stepping into midfield to help cover the absence of Granit Xhaka, operating behind Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra.
With Arsenal’s quality and variety posing a significant test, Geertruida’s blend of physicality, passing range and tactical flexibility could yet make him an important figure in Sunderland’s plans this weekend.
