Liverpool will link-up with their latest signing Jeremy Jacquet next season
Despite their defence needing a boost following their recent injury blows, Liverpool did not make any marquee transfers over the winter window. Mor Talla Ndiaye, a relatively unknown name, arrived at Anfield but no players expected to make an immediate impact on this season.
How Liverpool’s defensive structure holds up between now and the end of the season remains to be seen but Jacquet is expected to be a big player for the Reds once he joins.
Liverpool deal for Jeremy Jacquet praised
Liverpool have agreed a deal worth up to £60 million for Jacquet but he is expected to live up to his price tag.
French football expert and ESPN reporter Julien Laurens had a lot to say on the transfer, particularly the question of whether the French centre-back has what it takes to eventually succeed Virgil van Dijk.
"It's a lot of money but Jacquet has everything to become one of the best centre-backs in the world in the next few years. He is arguably the best centre-back of his generation,” Laurens said, via BBC Sport.
“He's quite tall, quick and strong - and he's a machine when it comes to duels in the air and on the ground. He reads the game well and is good on the ball.
“He's not a proper ball-playing centre-back yet. Technically, there is a lot to improve on, but he's a smart kid and he can get there and become like a Virgil van Dijk.”
How will Jeremy Jacquet fit in at Liverpool?
As things stand, Jacquet will be an option to replace Ibrahima Konate, who looks increasingly likely to leave Anfield at the end of the season. The France international is still yet to sign a new contract and has reportedly rejected as many as three new offers from the club.
His current deal expires this summer and reports believe the news of Jacquet’s pending arrival has heavily suggested Liverpool are preparing to bid farewell to Konate.
Joe Gomez is also a doubt for Liverpool’s future, as he came close to leaving the club to join AC Milan last summer. His recurring injury issues continue to hamper his time with the Reds and as he remains a rotational option under Arne Slot, he will likely consider a move for more regular football once the season ends.
