Liverpool return to action on Sunday afternoon with the visit of Manchester City, but Arne Slot is still waiting on key fitness updates ahead of the clash with the side currently second in the Premier League.

The main concern is Joe Gomez, who has missed the last two matches after suffering a hip injury in a collision with goalkeeper Alisson Becker during the defeat at Bournemouth.

Slot remains hopeful the defender could return to offer cover at right-back, with both Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley unavailable. Bradley is out for the season following knee surgery, while Frimpong is expected to miss a couple of weeks with a groin problem.

The Dutchman said on January 30: “He (Frimpong) will definitely not be in the squad tomorrow, so he is out for a few weeks. But [it’s] not as bad as we thought he would be out. It’s something positive from something not so positive.”

Alexander Isak is also sidelined for several months after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury sustained before Christmas. Slot said: “He’s not even on the pitch yet. I think it’s called a walker, he’s just out of his walker, so that tells you that he’s not on the pitch and not expecting him on the pitch today or tomorrow in terms of his recovery work.

“That’s going to take a while before he’s back, as we knew.” Teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni is ruled out for the season with an ACL injury, while Jayden Danns, Stefan Bajcetic and Wellity Lucky also remain absent.

Manchester City have injury issues of their own. Josko Gvardiol and John Stones are out, though Ruben Dias has returned to training. Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku are doubts, while Mateo Kovacic and Savinho are expected to miss out. City face Newcastle United in the League Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday.
