Liverpool confirmed on Monday night a £60m deal for Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, who will join the club on July 1. The 20-year-old completed his medical on Deadline Day, with the fee structured as £55m plus £5m in performance-related add-ons.

Chelsea had offered the same deal, but with Mamadou Sarr returning to Stamford Bridge and Josh Acheampong staying, Jacquet opted for Anfield, where he is expected to get more game time.

Liverpool currently have limited centre-back options, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate the only fit senior players, while Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are sidelined.

Konate’s contract expires this summer, making Jacquet a key addition. The move follows Liverpool’s failed pursuit of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace last summer, who instead joined Manchester City for £20m in January.

Jacquet, a France U21 international with five caps, has made 18 Ligue 1 appearances for Rennes this season and 32 in total since his debut in January 2024, including a loan spell at Clermont Foot. He also featured in the 2024 U19 European Championship final and was named in the Team of the Tournament.

On his move to Liverpool, Jacquet said: “I am honoured to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world. It was also very important for me to finish my time in red and black on a high, at my boyhood club, the club of my heart. I’m approaching this second half of the season with the desire to experience some great moments with my teammates and the fans.”

He was voted Rennes’ Player of the Month for January following impressive performances for the club. Rennes played five matches last month across all competitions, winning two, drawing one, and losing two. They currently sit 6th in Ligue 1 with 31 points. Less than 24 hours after his move to Anfield was announced, Jacquet started his 20th game of the season in Rennes’ Coupe de France defeat to Marseille.
