The Bayern Munich stalwart had been linked with a move to the Premier League in January amid interest from Arsenal and Spurs.

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both claimed to have considered a January transfer swoop for experienced Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, and the player’s preference over a new club in the summer may have emerged.

The 30-year-old had been linked with a move away from the German giants last month with it being the final chance Bayern Munich could cash in on the player ahead of his contract’s expiry at the end of the season. Goretzka has spent eight years at the club, playing 292 times and winning six Bundesliga titles, as well as the Champions League in 2020.

Spurs looked to recruit in midfield as a priority last month with Thomas Frank’s side eventually signing Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid. It is thought that an additional move for Goretzka was also on the cards.

Arsenal ‘seriously interested’ in late Bayern Munich transfer

Transfer specialist Christian Falk has now told CFBayern Insider that Arsenal were ‘seriously interested’ in signing the player before Deadline Day. The Gunners were linked with a midfield addition following an injury to Mikel Merino which will see the versatile Spaniard race to be back before the end of the campaign.

Arsenal were said to be plotting a late transfer for Newcastle United linchpin Sandro Tonali after manager Mikel Arteta hinted at a potential late signing in a press conference on Monday. Nothing came from any of those links but Falk believes Goretzka could be on his way to the Premier League in the summer.

The player has confirmed that he will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent this summer, presenting a tempting option for clubs across the continent. The report claims that there is a ‘strong chance’ that the midfielder would agree to a move to the Emirates Stadium, should Arsenal still be interested.

Goretzka hailed as ‘outstanding’ for Bayern Munich resilience

Goretzka has struggled for minutes at times since the emergence of Aleksandar Pavlovic at Bayern Munich but has remained professional and fought for his place in the side. After links with a move away last summer, the star earned praise from former German international Sami Khedira for his work ethic.

In August, after an impressive performance in the DFL-Supercup final against Stuttgart, Khedira said: "Outstanding. It shows strength, maturity, but also extreme mentality and clarity of mind.

"Publicly, he has completely kept his mouth shut. Internally, from what we hear, he has been working like a madman, and he is highly respected within the team... Through his behaviour, he has also sent a signal to national coach Julian Nagelsmann."
