Celtics big man scratched from Rockets game amid trade rumors

The Celtics have already agreed to one trade ahead of Thursday’s deadline but more moves could still be in the works. One potential name that could be on the move is reserve forward Chris Boucher, who has been out of Joe Mazzulla’s rotation since November.

Boucher was a late scratch for Tuesday’s win over the Mavericks and he was listed as out again on Wednesday night against the Rockets for what the team is listing as personal reasons. Boston will also be without Anfernee Simons (trade looming), Sam Hauser (thumb) and Jayson Tatum (Achilles) for Wednesday’s matchup. Jaylen Brown (hamstring) is doubtful.

Michael Scotto of Hoopshype reported last week that Boucher is drawing ‘exploratory interest’ from the Hawks, 76ers and Suns among other teams. He signed with Boston in August on a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum but fell out of the rotation in November. He appeared during garbage time minutes in a win over the Kings on Friday night but drew the ire of Sacramento after attempting a 3-point shot in a blowout as time expired.

The 33-year-old is averaging 2.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in nine games this year but is a 33 percent career 3-point shooter. With Nikola Vucevic acquired as part of the Simons trade, it would not be a surprise to see the Celtics try to pursue an additional ball handler in his spot, whether it comes via trade or the buyout market. Boston is still $5.9 million over the luxury tax line as well, even after acquiring Vucevic so moving off Boucher’s contract could produce some financial savings while also balancing out the roster.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m.
